Want to re-paint furniture?

I have a two shelf bookcase. The color is white! I just moved into a new place and my furniture is new, the carpet and wall color does not match the bookcase. How can i repaint the shelf without screwing up? Is it necessary to use sandpaper to get off white color? I do not know anything about it, any help is appreciated!
